Cooling Your Data Center or Telecom Site
|
|
Today's data centers and telcom sites are hotter than ever. The most common cooling opportunity for data centers is to improve air flow - with improved air flow comes improved cooling as well as energy savings.
Better air flow starts with simple low cost measures:
- Install blanking panels in server cabinets to improve the return air path to cooling units
- Plug excess or oversized floor tile cable cut outs
- Clear obstructions under the raised floor
- Redistribute perforated floor tiles to match any data equipment changes you may have made
These are just a start, Electronic Environment Corp. (EEC) offers many solutions to help keep your critical facility cool (but not overcooled) including maintenance tuning of your critical equipment, humidification, as well as passive, active, and intelligent data center cooling options.
Below you will find some of the other data center cooling solutions that we offer as well as a case study based on the installation of the Demand Based Cooling solution at The Hanover Insurance Group.

Case Study: EEC Assists The Hanover Group with Data Center Energy Savings and IT Cooling Capacity
|
|
The Hanover Insurance Group was looking to improve their data center's cooling efficiency, as well as the current system's capacity - while allowing for increased IT (Information Technology) equipment densities within their data center at their headquarters in Worcester, MA.
EEC, working closely with The Hanover, recommended a unique solution that could not only save energy and eliminate hot spots, but also maximize IT cooling capacity in the data center. This system is the Demand Based Cooling (DBC) airflow and thermal management system from AdaptivCool.

Summary of Project:
- Cost of project: $144,000.00
- Estimated annual savings: 600,000 kWh
- Utility incentive: $21,500.00
- Company payback: 16 months (with rebate)
Benefits:
- Five out of 13 CRAC units were placed into hot-standby, and energy usage for cooling the data center was reduced by 27%
- Increased cooling redundancy
- Increased IT load capacity by 70kW
- IT equipment is thermally safe
- 24x7 monitoring allowing for automated CRAC unit response
- Energy incentive from the National Grid Commercial Energy Efficiency Program

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Service
|
 |
This image shows a 3D model of the thermal map along the height of the
server room. |
Many data centers today are experiencing "hot spots" where cooled air is not reaching servers. Our CFD 3-D modeling services will provide an analysis to simulate the air flow through your data center and will idenitify problems that can lead to overheated servers. Our data center experts will:
- Analyze data center floor space power consumption and heat load
- Calculate cooling distribution airflow requirements
- Establish a baseline CFD model
- Calibrate the CFD model based on actual airflow and temperature measurements
- Propose solutions to cooling problems identified by the CFD model and field survey
Visit our web site to see the Features and Benefits of performing a CFD analysis of your data center.

Data Center Cooling & Power Assessments
|
|

Make the most of your data center facility and infrastructure. Today your IT organization is facing a multitude of challenges:
- Increased workloads
- Evolving technologies
- Aging data centers
- Rising energy prices
- Increased environmental awareness
In many data centers, the power and cooling infrastructure has not kept pace with the dramatic changes in the IT environment.
By proactively managing data center / server room power and cooling systems, you can improve reliability, reduce energy costs and make the most of your existing facility and infrastructure.
EEC offers three levels of assessments to fit your data center needs:
- Health Check
- Intermediate
- Comprehensive
We also can configure a package that will fit your business needs - contact us to learn more or schedule an assessment today.
Check out this article from eWeek.com that talks about why it is important to have a service program that includes facility assessments along with preventive maintenance and monitoring.
Along with our power & cooling assessments, we have recently partnered up with The Revere Group to offer end-to-end data center assessments and services, see the announcement below.

Partnership for End-to-End Data Center Services and Assessments |
|
Managing and facilitating growth is among the top priorities of executives today. With this growth, data center managers are being forced to support more equipment, resulting in increased heat loads. Data center services and assessments from the combined services of EEC and The Revere Group offer customized analysis of your entire data center, with recommendations to optimize your IT resources and streamline your data center for more efficient operations.
The Revere Group and EEC can provide end-to-end data center assessment services that include a review of your existing data center's:
- Reliability
- Points of failure
- Growth
- Floor space
- Power and cooling needs
Revere/EEC can assess and evaluate your IT inefficiencies, then optimize and tune-up performance to support new business objectives. The assessment approach and best of breed tools that we leverage can produce the information you need to understand what savings can be achieved.
