EEC completes turnkey data center design build project for Genesis HealthCare

The high-density data center was designed with 100 watts of power per square foot to handle power-hungry blade servers

MARLBOROUGH, MASSACHUSETTS – June 17, 2008 – Electronic Environments Corporation (EEC) recently completed a turnkey data center design build project for Genesis HealthCare.  The data center is located on the fifth floor of Genesis HealthCare’s newest building in their corporate campus in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania.  The scalable data center was designed to handle Genesis’ current needs, supporting power-hungry blade server technology, as well as their future operating goals.  Built with redundant power and cooling, and piped to handle future expansion, the data center is equipped to grow with Genesis.

The project team was challenged with working inside a building that was being built up around them.  Among the many obstacles new building construction can pose; the most difficult was moving heavy infrastructure equipment up to the fifth floor without construction or freight elevators.  The equipment was rigged in through an opening on the side of the building.  EEC’s project managers worked side-by-side with the base building contractors, project personnel, subcontractors, and EEC’s complete team of design and engineering experts to ensure design integrity, timelines, and budgets were all adhered to.

The scope of the project included the 2,600 square foot data center built on two-foot raised access flooring; a 400 square foot UPS and electrical room; and the installation of all the infrastructure equipment including: three 30-ton and two 8-ton AC units, two 200 kVA - 168 circuit power distribution units, two 300 kVA UPS systems with two battery cabinets each, two - 168 circuit remote distribution cabinets, an 800 AMP main distribution panel, and two 500 AMP maintenance bypass cabinets.  The project also included a complete FM-200 fire suppression and detection system, an under-floor and above-ceiling water detection system, and a complete environmental monitoring solution integrated into Genesis HealthCare’s data center response room.  EEC oversaw the turnkey project from design up through and including construction, inspection, testing and certification, and post-construction services.

Genesis HealthCare - Data Center - Design and Build by Electronic EnvironmentsKen Silverwood, Genesis HealthCare’s Vice President of IS Internal Operations, stated “We selected EEC for their experience with both design/build and services, and their match to the size and scope of our project.   We were very pleased with the flexibility shown by EEC, from the Executive team, to their designers/engineers and project managers to work with our requirements, from the RFP stage, through the bid process and final design/build.  We are now fully operational with a premier class high-density data center thanks to EEC, and we are extremely pleased with the results which we expect will meet Genesis current and future information processing needs.”
