Choosing a Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) System

APC, Powerware, or Mitsubishi UPS systems are at the heart of most mission critical facilities; they function automatically to supply AC electrical power to your critical load. A true on-line UPS reduces utility power (AC) to its most elementary form (DC), and from this basic energy, recreates a new power source (AC).  There are many kinds of UPS systems available; there are different designs and technologies used in manufacturing a UPS unit. The type of unit, be it Mitsubishi, ADP or Powerware, you need will depend upon the equipment you are looking to protect and the amount of power (or load) the unit is required to handle.

Specifying and evaluating power systems is far more difficult than basic UPS theory, many issues must be addressed:

  • Sizing WRT inefficiencies
  • Input/output harmonics & filters
  • Crest factor / slew rate
  • National Electrical code requirements
  • Diagnostics/monitoring
  • Static bypass/maintenance bypass
  • Rectifier / inverter technology

Without proper electrical engineering training and field proven experience, deciphering UPS manufacturers’ (such as APC, Powerware, or Mitsubishi) claims is nearly impossible. EEC works with its clients to ensure they obtain the best system for their network. As an independent engineering firm that specializes in emergency power systems we are not manufacturer dependent; our solutions are based on your needs and your budget.
